Accepting the implicit context of this essay (American, white, Protestant mainline / Anglican), I agree that it's widely true, with only scattered exceptions.

The issue really has two separate, though related, parts. While congregations do draw exclusion boundaries by class, as you lay out here, there's more to it. Congregations also draw inclusion boundaries that erase or ignore class identity. There's usually an assumption the all of us identify as "people like us". When someone does not -- when, as you say, someone lives in a trailer, shops at Walmart, says "ain't" -- they know that they don't meet the implicit class standard of the church. And because we in America don't learn the language of class beyond the financial aspect, nobody has the words to discuss why some people inexplicably leave the church, nor to explain for themselves why they are leaving.

Wow. Finding it difficult to believe they have our best interests at heart when the concerns of younger clergy, clergy with dependents under the plan, clergy serving smaller churches, are all dismissed as "whiners." The foundational principles of the BOP are supposed to share the burden of care for all members, not protect the assets of the highest earners at the expense of the lowest. Thanks for sharing this analysis.

I did not know that RLC excised the article, and I did not know Jay Bakker complained about it. I say the critique is necessary. I like to read what Peter Rollins says, and Micah Bales's critique prompted him to respond, which made his thought even sharper. I like what both are saying. It's not just a right/wrong false dichotomy. What is not helpful is to pretend that anyone is above critcism. How dare someone criticize Pete? How dare we not? We owe such critique to each other.
